My grandpa has an '84 Lincoln Town Car sitting in his field that he got for free. Has 60,893 miles on it and I am considering getting the 302 and possibly the AOD out of it to put in my '72. The car used to run and drive great, but hasn't been started in a couple of years. Now it will only start and idle for a few seconds on starting fluid. I guess the fuel pump has gone bad from sitting. This thing has what looks like a very early version of fuel injection on it, looks like a carburetor with 2 fuel injectors spraying down it. I took that off and bolted a 2 barrel carb on thinking it would just run fine on the carb, but now it won't try to start at all. I connected all the wireing back up to the fuel injection looking carb and set it off to the side thinking I could trick it into running, but it still won't run. Short of putting a Duraspark distributor in it, is there any way I can trick this thing into running on a carb? I would like to get it running good enough to take it for a ride around the back roads up here to see if the engine and trans work good enough to use.
Uhh... hmm... I'll have to get back to you on that. Got the car running. Dosen't run quite right with a carburetor and fuel injection working together, but it runs good enough. Think I found me a 302.
Here goes nothing. I sorted them by manufacturer and year with engine, trans and rearend listed. Cadillac engine, automatic. 32,000 original miles, hasn't ran since the early 90's but I'm working on it right now. This is one big ass car! According to my dad, from a standing start, it would fish tail and smoke the rear tires with ease until they popped. My great aunt bought it new. Can't wait to get it running and see what it will do. Daily drivers: 2005 F150 XLT, 5.4 V8 / automatic 2001 F150 XL, 4.2 V6 / 5 speed, 300,000+ miles 1997 Ford Expedition, 4.6 V8 / automatic 240,000+ miles 1995 Mustang GT, 5.0 / 5 speed These are just off the top of my head. Chances are I forgot a few. I have rode in or drove 98% of these cars at some point in my life. Lots of stories and history attached to these cars.
The reason it probably doesn't run right is because that fuel pump pressure is higher than the 5 or 6 psi the carb is looking for. You're probably dumping a ton of fuel into the engine. Get a 3 port regulator or rig up the regulator that's on there now to be adjustable. All it takes is a little brazing and a trip to the hardware store.
I wasn't running it on the tank, the fuel pump in the tank is not working and the tank is full of 3+ year old gas. I just rigged up a 2 1/2 gallon lawn mower gas tank and a cheapo 5 psi electric fuel pump I had laying around. The car ran down the road ok but it was hard to start and didn't want to idle. The carburetor was the factory one off my dad's '71 Comet GT and probably needed to be adjusted after sitting around in a box since the early 80's. I may try to get it to idle next weekend, but all I really care is that the car runs solid, dosen't smoke, and dosen't make any funny noises.
Easiest way to do it is just to remove and chunk the high pressure external fuel pump. Then add another fuel filter (ranger fuel filter seems to work) in it's place. The low pressure pump in the tank is only going to make 5-6 psi anyway, and it's plenty capable of feeding enough volume. Sorry, I know its a little late but I thought I should add that....worked on my old '85 LX...which...btw needs a new home. I put the factory HP pump back on it and repaired the EFI...and now it runs like a champ! Somebody come get this thing ('85 Mustang LX 5.0/automatic....hatchback, $900 takes it!)
It actually has both. Everything connected right up to the carb like it was made for it. mavman, whats the body like on that '85?
