I will be getting a truck pretty soon. I have found several in my price range. I was wondering what your opinions on them were. I will go offroad in it but I'm not going to drive through a mudpit. The 69 would get stuck on wet grass so anything would be an improvement. Thanks for any advice

I haven't heard much bad about them. The 5-speeds are extra light duty, but at least you got the OD. The 300 six will get better mpg w/the 5-speed, but tow more with the AOD(AODE?). The v8 trucks seem to get about the same mpg w/either.

I had a 89 F150, the only issue I ever had, was it cracked an exhaust manifold, and the dealer told me they had issues with them. I loved that truck, but it was never the same after it T boned a Astro van, one day, while I wasn't driving it....
Check the oil pans, they rust out up here, and the rear tanks, if it has 2.

My '93 is a 300/ 5-speed 2wd w 3.08 gears. Not a good combo for pulling. It'll do it, but you 'bout have to slip the clutch to get moving w/a loaded trailer. I guess it does ok...but my '77 460 will outpull it with a dead cylinder and gets about the same mpg loaded. If I knew I'd be using it so much for pulling I'd got an automatic or the 351.

My '90 has the 300-6 with a 5-speed and 4wd. It does good off road with the new mud tires I got on it. I havn't pulled anything with it yet, but since it still has the factory 3.08s and 33" tires, it would be rough. If it was regeared it would do fine i think though. I've got 146k miles in mine and it feels like it got lots of life left in it. My speedo is off slightly due to the tires, but when i calculate mileage i get around 12 to 13 mixed.

One of my dad's buddies fell on some hard times back in 1997, so my dad took over the payments on a '94 flare side F150 the guy had with the 5.0/auto. He pulled his Comet on a car trailer with it a few times on the very rare occasions that he didn't drive the Comet to a show, and it would run 70 down the highway all day long with the A/C full blast, pulling that Comet like it wasn't even back there. It was a great truck. Rear main seal started leaking when it got about 160,000 on it for some reason, and he was itching for another Mustang about that time, so in the spring of 2001 he traded it in on a '95 GT, which got totaled out literally 2 weeks after he bought it. Some older guy probably in his mid 60's has the truck now, we still see it around here from time to time.

My lead man at work has an '89 F150 4x4 with the 300 6 in it as well. Red with red interior with the argent "wagon wheels" on it, small lift sitting on 33's. It's a damn good looking truck. I bother him all the time about when he's going to trade me for my Chevy. :biglaugh:

I had an 87 F250 4x4 with a 351HO/Auto. It was a great truck, mileage sucked though. Sold it to a friend who used it to push snow. With the salt in the bed he didn't even need to use the 4wd.

Several of my friends have had them with 300/5sp, 302/5sp, 302/auto and 351/auto. They pulled boats and cars with no problems.
