I am in the process of rebuilding the rear brakes. When I took off the rear shoes, and the shoe spreader bar, I noticed the spring at the end had been broken. After some research I found a retainer clip and spring at Mac's Antique Auto. The retainer is not on either of my rear brakes so I was wondering if that is necessary or not. Here is a pic of the broken spring and then the good one on the other side. I don't see a retainer on it. Any advice? Also the 9" brake parts are difficult to locate. image.jpeg image.jpeg

Those springs simply slide on. There is nothing that holds them on, and they only go on one end.

U should be able to buy entire spring kit from most auto supply retailers. All the spring are necessary. Since you have the thing taken apart, replace all the springs -- "only way to roll".

Thanks for the pic and the help guys. I'm hoping to get it back on the road soon. Been off the road since 2010. Ordered the spring from Mac's. One for both sides.

Hope U intend to replace all those springs - they are weak. U want them to have the strength to pull the shoe away from the drum completely once the pressure drops from releasing brake pedal.
I usually do one side at a time - use other side as guide as to how things are suppose to go back together.

Thanks Mojo. The spring kits I have found do not have that particular spring with them though. I did get a set of new springs. Just waiting for my order from Mac's to come in. Replaced the wheel cylinder with one for a 1970 Mustang 9" drum. Parts interchange list said it would work and it seems like it will. Bolted right up.

IMG_1423.JPG My most recent issue now is that I need at least one emergency brake link spring for a 9" drum brake. Mac's won't have any until mid November. Would anyone on here know if another place to get one? Have one you can spare? I might check the local auto wrecker too. I'm open to ideas. I cannot finish the rear brakes without this stinking spring.

On assembly, remember the longer shoe goes to the rear, short shoe to front...

Got it. Is this spring needed? Or can I install without it?

I would assume if it was not necessary, Ford would have saved the .50 cents and left them off.
