I searched through the archives and read about every kind of ignition switch problem except for the one I have. My engine turns over before I reach the spring return. I replaced the switch to no effect. Thinking maybe my new switch was defective I bought another switch but that one does the same thing. I kept the positioning pin in place and the ignition key in the off position when installing. I even moved the switch up and down on the mounting slots. The ignition key lock is also brand new. The car began life with a column automatic. I restored a junk yard column for a floor shift version but I can't see where that should matter. Were there different length rods connecting the key switch to the ignition switch?? I am hard pressed to think of anything on this car that has not been replaced. It's basically a 2016 model. Given all the weird electrical problems I'm considering burning sage in my garage and/or sprinkle everything with holy water. I'm kidding of course ( well, kind of).
So you are saying that when you turn the switch to the first position, lets call that the run position it tries to start or does start. If it starts does the starter stay engaged ?
It starts cranking in the position right before you reach the final spring loaded, or normal cranking position. I have not been able to fire up the engine yet so I can't answer your second question. It won't start because I installed the distributor one tooth off. Right now I'm trying to get the distributor to fully drop back in correctly. Hopefully the motor will then finally fire up and I can get back to the switch.
