I hate to say it but this could be a number of things.
I dont know what engine your car is equiped with but that doesnt really matter. If your burning oil at start-up (cloud of blue smoke from the tailpipe) then its more than likely you've got bad valve guide seals, as the car sits idle excess oil from the top of the cylinder head is leaking past the valve guide seals into the cylinders and is burned away when you start the engine.
It would be easier to diagnose if you could tell me when / if you notice blue smoke from the tailpipe.
Try this,,,,Drive the car up a long steep incline and at the top of the hill let off the gas and at the same time check your rear view mirror to see if you can see any blue smoke. OR Drive down a highway at posted speed (55-60mph) and let off the gas and at the same time check the mirror and look for a puff of smoke. Both of these tests (If you see smoke) usually mean that you have worn / broken piston rings. You see,, as the engine vacuum increases (when you let off the throttle) oil is being blown up past the worn / broken rings into the combustion chamber where its mixed with the air/fuel mixture and burned, causing the smoke.

A friend of mine with an '83 Ford F-150 with a straight six just had a problem similar to yours,, his truck would backfire through the tailpipe if he let off the gas at high RPM's. Ended up pulling out all the pistons and found the culprit,,two of the compression rings on #2 piston were broken into several peices.

    Hope this helps

Also,,,a compression test should be performed on your engine,,that would tell you a LOT about your engines condition.

ok, when I start it up I get a cloud of blue smoke, then soon after it will stop smoking until i put in gear and drive it will smoke then. could it be a bad head gasket since i have oil on the distributer side of the I6 block?she doesn't backfire any while driving though.do you know how to check compression and what it should be?i'll try the other two tests also.

well, i don't get smoke when driving down the road and letting off the gas or on an incline.just when i'm stopped or on acceleration.
