I have a 300 six in my 74 mav. I don`t know much about trannys but have been leaning toward a 3-speed auto with auto overdrive. I have seen shifters in cars that have 1\2 on first knotch, 3 on the second and (O) for overdrive on the third. Is this a manual overdrive? If so, would that be easier for me and what would I want to get it out of? Thanks, Steve ( still looking for a 3:55 rear end)
Off Topic - Your Engine MaverickDad, do have any pics of your 300 six in your Maverick. I came across an old article on that swap, but it was missing a page. I would to see a picture of it. I have only seen a 300 in one other Maverick. I kicked it around myself to be a little different. Did you put it in yourself, or was it already in the car when you picked it up? Thanks,
about 300-6 I put the 300 in myself. I had to modify the oil pan and move the radiator forward about 1 to 2 inches and also had to drop the motor mounts a little. The crank pully is about 1 inch from the frame at a idle but more at a tourk. Radiator hoses were a pain because I used the mav radiator. I don`t have a pic but I can get you one. I have it bored out 40 over with a hi-po cam, milled head.offenhouser 4-barrel intake and a 450 cfm carb. I put 302 springs under it and also had to lower the shock mounts (top) to clear the card. The carb set about 1/2 inch from the hood so I put on a dodge himi hoon scoop (34 inches wide on one end) for clearance. It turned out nicely though. I think a 3:55 rear end with a 3-speed auto trans with overdrive would be good with it. Maverickdad
300 six Setup Sounds like a nice setup! What motor mounts were you able to use? What kinda mods did you have to do for the oil pan? Did you just drop the motor in or have you had in running with another tranny for a while? Just curious how that 300 six with 40 over does in your Maverick? I would love to see pics of the engine and hood scoop! Post them here or email me at maverick.guy@netzero.net . Did you every get your front bumper issue resolved?
300-6 in mav I used the 300 mounts but had to redrill holes in the brackets the mounts that bolt onto and also lower them down. The deep part of the oil pan was at one end and I had to put it into the center. Also had to make a oil pick up tube. I think you can go to cliffordproformance and get a set up to put a 300 in a mav. I know there is a set up to put one in a falcon or a mustang. I found this out after I done it. I have had it in now for about 2 years. It runs great. Plenty of power!!! Going up hill is like going on flat land but a 300 is made for low tork and pulling power. Also at cliffordproformance.com you can find out how to get more then 400hp out of the 300. That is a great place to go for stright 6 proformance parts. I don`t have any pics at this time but I will get some and send you. I have a 3-speed auto trans at this time but want a 3-speed auto with overdrive and a 3:55 rear end. I like doing the unusual. I just got through putting in front and back seats out of a 97 saturn. I had to remold the back panels a bit but it worked out great. They are leather seats and I am doing the panels, doors and all by the back window in naugaleather. Not sure about the dash yet. Still thinkink on that one. I did do the dash pad through. I used 3\8 carpet pad under all the vinly. (acturally a vinyl but as close to leather as you can get from what I was told). I`ll get back to you with pics. Thanks for your interest, Maverickdad
A little story about a 300 powered Mav. A couple years ago I had photos on this board of a drag car with a 300 that was running 11.5s. Recently, the original builder of that car contacted me for photos of the car. He built it in 1976 right here locally and I never knew it and used to run in the 11.20s. Original builder now resides in Great Barrington ,Mass and works for a high end Mustang restoration company. He sold the car 20 years ago to an owner in N.Y. state. Car is known as the Mad Frenchmen and often appears at Englishtown all Ford weekends. ............ Steff maybe you could pull the photos up again.
