Anyone use one, and is it worth the money? Looking at the XP series, maybe the 500X. Will it be enough "doctor" for my drawer full of drillbits? I have to have at least 150-200 dull bits laying there www.drilldoctor.com
Yeah, infomercials are great, but I was hoping someone has had some experience with one, or a similar tool. I have a couple hundred bucks worth of "worthless" bits, and it would be nice to "re-worth" them. Sad thing is my dad is a life-long machinist, and it is amazing to watch him grind one back to life. Takes him about 10 seconds per bit, but I could never get the skill down. I can get them to cut a little, but they still dull right out. His will cut like new, if not better... But I have WAY too many to send him to work with. It would take him a full day to sharpen them all.
yes they work decent for the average do it your-selfer be careful grinding the carbide ones that you don't burn them.
I got my husband one of those for Christmas last year and he uses the daylights out of it. He had dozens of dulled out drill bits and The Drill Doctor did a great job of putting a good, sharp edge back on them. It takes a little practice at first, but once you get the hang of it you should be pretty happy with the results.
Agree with Jean! Take your time an use it with junk bits till you get use to it, after you get the hang of it, it's hard not to use it! My buddies Dad goes looking for bits to sharpen now. Great tool!
I have one, works good. I haven't tried any really hard bits, but for this set from Home Depot, does great.
Like I said, my dad can do that without even thinking about it. It has always amazed me to watch him do it. Like a talent that is acquired and not learned. I can get them to cut, but they dull out pretty quick, so I am doing something wrong. Besides, I don't have a bench grinder in my garage, so for a similar price I can get the drilldoctor. And still eventually need to buy a grinder...
When I first went to school it was to be a tool and die maker the first semster all we did was make high speed steel tooling and learn how to sharpen drills. The sad part is first shop I went to work for used a drill doctor and most of the guys working there for years could not do it by hand, it is still quicker for me to do it on a bench grinder.
