Allis Chalmers rebuild

Aside from the Camaro, we also hauled this old Allis Chalmers lawn tractor up from Terry's uncle's house yesterday. This thing has sat on the car port down there for many, many years. I brought it home and I'm going to mess with it as a little side project to see if I can breath some life back into it for Terry. It's not a Kubota, but hey, at least it's the right color.







Engine appears to be an 11 horse Briggs. Date code on it decodes as 3/24/1980





I'm not sure if this hour meter is original or not, but there is no way this thing only has 33 hours on it.

First order of business will be to try and get the rust ball of an engine on it running long enough to test out the transmission, since we don't really know why his uncle parked the tractor (though I suspect it had something to do with the starter, since it was taken off and the bendix is half taken apart on it). If the transmission checks out alright, then I'll start tearing it down and cleaning and lubing everything. We have a pretty nice newer 12 horse briggs on another cheapo "Rally" brand tractor that has a messed up transaxle, so I'll probably end up swapping that engine in.

Thats a pretty neat little tractor. I had no idea that Allis Chalmers made lawn tractors.

 

With 4 flat tires and with it in gear, a tie down strap was really all that was needed, and even that probably wasn't needed. It definitely wasn't going to go anywhere.

I did throw a starter on it and shoot some starting fluid in it. Put some jumper cables to it and it backfired through the carb and caught fire. I guess it's been sitting all these years on the intake stroke so the intake valve is stuck open. I kind of figured it had a stuck valve to begin with since there wasn't really any compression to speak of when you rolled it over by hand. Anyway, I'd have to pull the head off and probably the carb and little tappet cover off to get the valve unseized, then I would have to get new gaskets and what not. I don't think this crusty old engine is worth that kind of work when we have another perfectly good engine to go in it. I can roll the engine over by hand and see the rear wheels move, so I'm content with that. I'm going to pull the engine, gas tank and all that tomorrow and take the tractor to the car wash and pressure wash the hell out of it.

Going to have to go through all the wiring as well. With jumper cables hooked to the battery, no lights or anything turn on, and the starter solenoid dosen't click. I figure either bad connection at the starter switch or the switch itself is bad.

 

I would like to see the pto part of it.

After the brief search I did, I like it alot. It seems better built than the cheapos I been seeing at the stores lately. Like I said, I would like to see the pto part cause I have been looking for this style machinery for the hole digging I have to do.

 

I grew up riding on one of those, and i still cant talk my dad out of it, they were made by the simplicity division of Alice Chalmers, they made that style into the 90's with different tin on it under the deutz alice name. He has all of the basic attachments for it the 4 foot wide tiller, the mowing deck and the snowblower attachment. You can get things like brush shredder attachments and everything like that.

 

i think you need to make a...Farm Tractor...out of it by taking it to Jamies Grandpas field...

Pulled the engine, which is an 8 horse, and hauled it to the car wash. A little bit of degreaser and pressure washing later, most of the dust, grease and grime is gone.







You should have seen the battery. Nothing but corrosion.

Well, I need an engine, some tires and a battery, maybe new belts.. This is going to end up being a very good tractor.

You know Jamie, aside from your tractor project, that bug/ant in your signature sure is annoying!!! I mean, it wouldn't be so bad if he/she just kept the figure 8 motion fluid!! NOOOOO he/she feels the need to stop every now and then and I think that is the most annoying part!!!!

Alot of people have been refitting those to use honda ohv 4 strokes 18 horse motors. Or the Briggs and stratton vanguard motors
