    Hi everyone,

I know this has nothing to do with Mavericks but I really need some help here. But I know you guys are way more auto savvy than I am so I thought I'd ask for some input.

I went to start my 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4x4 this afternoon and it won't start. It won't even fart. I know it's getting fuel b/c the fuel pump is fairly new and I can hear it pushing fuel. I checked all the fuses and they're all fine. I checked both fuse boxes too.

Funny, cuz it ran fine yesterday. Started right up with no problems. A neighbor of mine had a code reader, so he plugged it in and found 2 codes:

    1. Missfire: Cylinder 2 (already knew that one)
    2. And a large emissions leak. (I already knew that one too, and supposedly had that fixed a year or so ago when I got my emissions checked, even though it ran fine)

    Any thoughts of ideas???

I feel so helpless and I have a new job that starts Monday and right now I have no running vehicle.

I'm pretty sure it's not. But I really don't have a way to find out cuz the spark plugs are underneath the coil pack (no wires). FYI, I replaced the coil pack about 2 years ago.

Fuel filter is located in the fuel pump, and that was just replaced about 2 years ago as well.

    ......

Im a Jeep guy. My 2001 tj if the battery terminal is a lil dirty mine wont start, it does something to the computor and shuts it down. Gas caps are a pain five clicks or more ottherwise engine light comes on!

first thing that comes to mind is the crank sensor...Its mounted on the top of the bell housing...I forget which side (sorry) You will develope a few new cuss words trying to get to it for removal...IIRC A bell housing bolt holds it in place. Common component to fail on jeeps.

I was wondering if that may be causing some issues... Is it an expensive part to replace?

Yeah my engine light finally went out about a year ago. Personally, I think the bulb is burned out lol!! I'll give a check on those battery terminals and see if that's the issue.

Just cleaned the battery terminals. That wasn't the issue, although they were pretty dirty. So now I'm on to crank sensor... too bad it's out in the street.....

Darren is the guy you want to talk to, but I'm also 110% sure Pete (mavman72) knows exactly what he's talking about, there will be no guessing with these guys.

CRANK SENSOR 90% of jeep 4.0 no starts are the crank sensor. I have do at least 5 4.0 no starts all were the crank sensors. Also the easiest way to get to it is take the trans crossmember bolt out and lower it a few inches then use a swivel socket on a very long extension. Figured that one out when I did a t-case drop on my 96 cherokee.

Ok so the consensus is the Crankshaft Position Sensor. I may not have the time this weekend and I have to start work on Monday. My mother (who I'm living with for the time being) doesn't like the idea of her lending me $75 to get a part and try and fix it myself. She wants to take it to a local shop... Grr! But she's also been gracious enough to loan me her vehicle until this gets resolved. After doing some research, the CPS seems to definitely be the issue. I hope it doesn't cost too much to have them fix it.... I'd rather do it myself and save some money but she doesn't trust my mechanical knowledge, I guess.

Thanks guys for your help! I'll mention the CPS to the repair guy and we'll see if you're right. Btw, I believe you are right about the CPS (y).

Also, I'm sick of all this electronic BS they put in cars. In my opinion, it's more stuff to go wrong with the vehicle. I think I'm going to just throw my Jeep on eBay after it's fixed.

So if anyone has a decent Maverick that'll be safe for everyday driving that they want to sell, and you're in a somewhat of a close proximity to Cleveland, OH (no more than 150 miles)... PM me. Looking for 71-73 Mav that came stock WITHOUT emissions crap on it. And I think early 74s didn't have emissions stuff on it either (if I remember correctly...)

Towed it to the shop this morning. Still haven't heard anything yet. I know they say no news is good news, but I am thinking the opposite. I hope this doesn't end up costing me an arm and both my legs.
