Did all mavericks with auto's come with C-4's ? or did the early (69.1/2 or 70's) come with a differant trany? I'm taking apart my parts car (not sure what year it is) and want to be sure the tranny will work behind my 289 before I pull it. The car is small bumpered has the package tray with the key in the column. The dash and vin # are gone so I'm not positive what year it is. It also has a 6cly with 120hp on the air cleaner, and it does have an 8" rear with 4 bolt wheels. Thanks Russ
russ, if it really is a 120hp, than my book says it is a 200/6 engine. in 1970 they used a c-4 with that engine. they used 2 different types. the only difference being the external hsg. mount for trans mtg. the c-4 uses 11 bolts in the oil pan. in the middle of 1965 ford changed from the 5 bolt bellhousing to the 6 bolt bh , but the bellhousing portion of the c-4 unbolts and can be swapped. good luck
C4 Info If I remember right, the C4 bell housing used on the 200 six will not work on the V8. The 250ci will though. You will have to check to see if the bell bolts to the case or the front pump and get a housing to match. Then you can use that trans. There are also two different sizes of bells, one is a small one for use with 157 tooth flywheel, the other is slightly larger for the 164 tooth wheel. You can use either one but must use the matching flywheel size. Also there are 24 and 26 spline input shafts, the torque converter must also be the same spline count. The 26 is perferred because it is a bit larger in diameter and more readily availabel. A trip to the local salvage yard can get all this off any 302's of early models, not the later 5.0's, they are of different balance etc. Now that your are confused here is more stuff to think about, there are also two different converter bolt patterns. One is 10.5 inches and the other is 11 7/16 inch. Hopefully you are going to put a new converter in anyway and just have to get one to match which flywheel you have. We can also get into C3-C4's and C5's which all will bolt up also, 4 disc clutch pack or 5 disc, larger servo's and a bunch of other technical stuff that probably is a bit more info than you want right now. For a street car go with the 26 spline trans and rebuilt converter with proper flywheel. Don't forget to get a bell housing starter spacer plate too. If I have not been to clear on all this just give me a holler and I will go into more detail on what I know on these highly under rated transmissions. Have found that local scrap yards are full of these parts and usually only charge by weight but they haul them off fast so must stay on top of the inventory day to day. Good luck as always.
Its a C-4 the tranny does have the kick down linkage so I'm pretty sure it a c4 so I'm gonna pull it. I think the 200 bell housing threw me off, it is totally different than the one behind my 289. Thanks for all of the input guys.
KICK DOWN LEVER Russ - Can you tell me what the kick down lever looks like (curved w/ a stud sticking out at the end or staight like a z if you laid it on it's side). I just installed a C-4 in my '76. It had a 3 speed in it. I can't find the lever, so I'll have to search the bone yards. Thanks for the help. Mike
