i recently purchased a 1977 maverick and i was able to get the motor running (4.1L 250) and im almost finished with most of the rust repair so i decided i was going to try and move it around and see what happens. well nothing happens. i check the transmission level and it was okay. I tried putting it in all the gears and nothing happens. It doesn't even sound like its trying to do anything. What should I check first, im thinking the linkage cable might have something wrong with it? this is my first project car and first car ive had to deal with a transmission issue. and advice would be appreciated.

Is the linkage operating lever on side of transmission??? Does it engage park??? Freewheel in other gear positions??

If so and fluid level is correct, there's a problem inside the trans...

BTW you did check fluid with engine running?? With engine off they generally read high when fluid is correct...
