Hey all... '74 Maverick, 250 I6 here. Makes an awful shaking up to cruise speed (just started doing that yesterday) then smooths right out. How could I check for a bad motor mount on an I6? Also, I know the timing chain is shot.... gotta replace it this week. Could it be causing my troubles?
some signs: stepping on gas hard makes engine jump up. I had one go bad in my tbird, had initial vibration upon acceleration. Do a visual check, an old mount will look broken, cracked, split and all of the above. If your mount looks like anything other than a neat clean chunk of rubber, It wouldn't hurt to replace them. Depending on where the vibrationis coming from, you might want to check your driveshaft u joints as well.
stick a floor jack under the oil pan and jack it up. Put a piece of plywood between the jack & pan so you dont dent it. If the motor mount is broken, it will separate from the frame.
What I always did in my old Chrysler was lift up the hood so I could see the engine from inside the car put it in Drive and hold the brake and hit the gas, and also the fan hitting the guard was a good indication
you got it neal... that's how i showed my wife she busted an engine mount. i told her to not drop the car in gear on high idle...
Yessir, it was the motor mount (I'm her b/f) and I'm gonna replace it in the morning - as well as the timing chain.
Hey! Drop that metal rod, it's lightning!! I would not recommend to someone to raise the hood, put the car in gear and rev it up while holding the brake down. That is a recipe for disaster in the right or wrong situation. Jack the motor up as Dennis described and look for separation at the mount. Seth
