well, my mav runs great now....some idiot disconnected the trottle selonoid....but now, my car smokes..black..not big clouds..but consistent..and it smells like gas....i adjusted the carb..it doesnt seem to be running rich...so, my question is,could this problem be caused by bad plugs/wires??they are ancient and carbon covered, because they guy before me had it runnin real rich...what about timing?? will that cause black gassy smoke??

There is no need to post a message in multiple forums on this message board....we just end up reading it twice.

No offense but two replys and all u guys did was bash him over the head and said nothing to help him on his problem:(

Anyways, I had the same problem and I just adjusted the carb and that did it but if u already did that then it must be something else.

    hope your problem get resolved

Understand that these guys donate their time to this board, and were not trying to bash him...They were just trying to get information across.

If the spark plugs and wires are old, then replace them, however, they have carbon build up from a rich condition which is caused by too much fuel, not by the plugs being too old.

Adjust your carburator properly. If it has been a while since it has been rebuilt, then you may be looking at a rebuild.

Timing takes five minutes to correct. Would suggest the full tuneup, since you need one anyway. This will narrow down your problem significantly. Don't forget to do the points if it has them.

If your exhaust has black smoke and smells like raw gas, trust me, you're running rich. Keep adjusting, you'll get it right.

It is possible and likely that the float is eather full of gas ( hole in it) or the float bowl valve or "thingy-ma-gigger" is not sealing properly.
Black smoke and a fuel smell indicates a whole lotta un burned gas.

Like they said, a carb rebuild or replacement could be the solution.

the factory setting for the two barrel carb used on the 302 is I think 3.5 turns out. Although unfortunately my memory is bad and its been like two months since i had tuned mine so it might be 2.5 turns.
