Has anyone had any experience with or heard of a Boss 302 conversion for a Mav? I have a '73 4-door with the weak stock 302. She's got about 250,000 miles on the original motor and I thought this might be a fun way to go.
Am not sure what you are relating to but if by chance you have an original Boss engine, it will be a bolt in and go deal. Otherwise a good performance rebuild on any 302 should give the same results. Bored, decked, a good set of heads, cam, 10.5 + pistons, good set of rods, headers and dual plane manifold with a nice Holley four barrell should yield enough power to lite up the tires and then some. A 347ci in there would be a real sleeper too, I think someone here on the board has that set-up. Way too much fun to not do it. Had a built 272ci Y block in a 55 Ford 4dr painted with a brush. Made dozens of 60's era GM 327ci cars, very humble after a stop light to stop light contest. As the old saying goes "How fast do you want to go? How much money do you have to spend?"
If you have a Boss motor you will need to make so minor mods to make it work. If you don't have a Boss motor then don't waste your time or money to try and get one to work in a Mav or Comet. Do just like Old Guy suggested and you will be miles ahead. As always just my .02 Terry Gates AKA Bossmav
Thanks for the reply Old Guy and BOSSMAV. It makes the most sense to go the rebuild route. I'll look thru the postings and see if I can find the 347 build. I know the Boss build is more of a pipe dream but, a Boss 302 4-door Mav sounds sooo cool. Thanks again, Daddzcar
I'm actually in the process of putting a BOSS in my stallion and the only thing I've really had problems with is my headers, I had to get specially made ones and they costed about $600 Other than that, that is it. FYI couple tricks of the trade, The only thing you really need that's a boss is the heads and rotating assembly other than that you can slide with reg. 302 stuff afterwards. Also becareful if you do use a cam other than a boss cam and you use the 1.73 rockers like the boss it WILL bump your lift to about .030 more so make sure the clearance between your pistons and valves can handle it. Other than that if you have any questions please feel free to email me. I'm actually kinda learning as I go myself but if my mistakes can help someone else then I'm certainly gonna help out. Dustin
