I noticed that rivited brake shoes cost around 15 bucks more than bonded. Is riveted really any better than bonded?
The only advantage a riveted shoe gave back in the day, was that you could reline them when worn out. I actually had a shoe press and all the rivets at one time in the early 80's. Plus I had the shoe grinder which was like a drum sander for the asbestos shoes to even them out if they had a flat spot............... ............ Nobody does this kind of work anymore. I've never seen a quality pad bonding fail. Cheap ones yes, but never a good one.
I pulled my Mother in laws rear brakes on her car and the factory pads had separated...(both on one side). the pads looked new, very little wear.
I seen the glue let go on cheap shoes causing the wheel to lock up. I wouldn't want to take the chance on saving a few dollars when it comes to brakes
Bonded for regular grocery getter duty...Rivits for heavy duty brake beating/heating kind of use...IE: Drag racing/road racing...You get the idea...
Someone once told me the bonded shoes wear out sooner than the riveted ones...not sure if that is correct or not?
I read that semi-metallic shoes are for cars with power brakes and organic material shoes are for manual bakes. It takes less pressure to stop with the organic shoes.
