    Hey all,
I'm gonna go for it and get a new transmission. I have an appointment to go look at a '73 C4, the guy says it's in perfect working order as he pulled it to put a c6 in his mustang. What should i look for, in terms of wear and tear? I'm figuring i'll pull the pan and see what i can, check the output shaft for excessive play...what else can i do? He wants $150 for it, is that a fair price, assuming it is all he says it is? I plan on putting the TCI "Pro Super" rebuild kit in it anyways, so bands and clutches are not a concern.

    Thanks!
    Chris

You are going in the right direction on your inspection, end play will tell you alot about the condition of thrust washers and some other components. Look for signs of good previous maintenance practice(clean fluid and no burnt smell), see if any metal drums etc. show blue overheating and such. If you are going to go through it anyway with a complete rebuild, I think you could get a core trans from a salvage yard for less money. Also make sure you get the right bell housing for the flexplate you have, then you have to also get the 24 or 26 spline input shaft one, to match your converter. If you could sort through some cores at the yard, look for one with a PEE ID tag, these usually have a five disc foward clutch instead of four. Also look for one that has an "H" stamped servo cover, it is a bit larger piston and will give a little better band pressure etc. I buy cores here in ARKANSAS for 25.00 and kits for 47.00 basic. Just my two cents on it, good luck as always.
