So I've owned my Maverick since about 2004. Yesterday I had some family over for Mothers day and they all wanted to hear the car. I started it up and warmed it up a bit. Shut it off and was getting out when another part of the family came out to see what all the noise was. So I went to start it up again and there was this weird electronic sound coming out of the dash. Now mind you, I have done a ton of wiring for the fuel injection and all the added sensors so my first thought was...oh crap I'm burning something up. I started it anyway and either I couldn't hear it or it stopped. I shut it off and had a sleepless night trying to figure out what I had screwed up or what could be going wrong. I kept thinking maybe it was a bad relay. I even went out last night before I went to bed to make sure that I didn't smell anything electrical burning. The battery shutoff was disconnected so I felt relatively safe. Anyhow I just went out there again today and it did the same thing. I was freaking out trying to think of what might be going on because I don't recall any relays or wiring for that matter that I installed near the radio where I was hearing it. Then it dawned on me...it's the dang key in the ignition/door open buzzer!!! The thing must have died before I ever got the car or the wire coming from the key must be loose because in the almost 20 years I have owned it I have never heard it go off! I feel so stupid, but learn something new from this car every time I start it up.
It's amazing how something so small can get to us. I had a GTO years back and the alternator light would not go off. I had it tested on and off the car, battery never went dead but there was that stupid light. I finally had enough and pulled the bulb out and that's when the problem showed itself. Once I fired the car up all the gauges were dead, the fuse had blown and the power was back feeding from the alternator through the light to power the cluster. This was months of chasing my tail only to find I should have started with the fuse panel.
had a starter once that would crank for a month, then hit it and nothing. pulled it and had it checked 3 different times only to check good. this went on for months. I had 3 braided ground straps from the engine to the frame or firewall. on a whim one day I ran one from a starter bolt to the frame...been cranking ever since...
