I know there are different variations of the C4 such as the number of spline and what not. I'm wondering if there is a way to tell without removing the Tranny. I need to purchase a new Torque converter and would like to not take her apart until I have the parts but I want to make sure I get the right Torque Converter. MY motor is a 289 so I would guess it's the C4 for the years 1966-69 but I purchased the car from someone and I'm not sure if perhaps they used an adaptor of some type. Any info will be appreciated. Thanks!

Also I'm looking at the TCI Streetfighter Torque converter. I need about 3500-4000 stall. Anyone have any comments on this torque conveter or any suggestions as to a different one?
    Thanks Again!

Most of the early models were 24 spline, but there is no way to tell without pulling the trans for sure. Someone could have chgd. it to the 26 with matching converter. Also there are two different bolt patterns for converters depending on which flexplate you have, 10.5in and 11 7/16in. Don't think you can order one without having your dimensions first. As far as stall goes, unless you give the mfg. all your specs on engine, trans, gear ratio, weight etc., an over the counter converter probably will be very disappointing because the variation in engine torque output will affect it greatly. One dealer I talked to will not even sell one without a spec sheet filled out, to many complaints that a 3500 stall will only flash at 2400. Goes back to engine combination etc. to get full stall or close to it with the 3500. Download a sheet from TCI or PTC and fill in the blanks. They will tell you whats best for your application. Just for info the 26 spline is bigger diameter and a bit more suited to high stall and racing stuff.

I don't know if it holds true for all C4's, but on my tranny when i removed the transmission mount it was stamped just underneath what year the transmission was. Other than that, always listen to what old guy has to say because he knows his stuff!
