Hi, Converting a 77 Comet from auto to manual... First I ended up having to swap out the bracket. You couldn't just slide out the brake pedal and put the manual pedals in like in my earlier Comet. That was fun, but my question is in regard to the spring. Keep in mind I haven't installed any linkage yet its just the spring under the dash that connects to the clutch pedal. It's in place. It's just not acting like I envisioned it would. If you pull the pedal in place it snaps in place and looks right. However, if you push the pedal in, it snaps to the floor and stays there. It either snaps in place or snaps to the floor depending if you push it in or pull it in place. So is this how it's supposed to act? So does the spring from the clutch disk "fingers" give the pedal it's spring action? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. David
It's a assist spring that reduces effort to depress pedal. Without linkage connected, slamming to floor is normal. Springs in pressure plate are far stronger than the assist spring.
You don't need the assist spring when using a diaphragm pressure plate. If using the 3-finger plate then it is nice to have.
