Took my Comet head to a mechanic friend of mine for a valve job.
On the way noticed my Ranger engine sounding like hell sort of like bearings. Was running HOT. put water in and nursed to mechs place. Upper Radiator hose blew. Put new hose and water in and went home. started to heat up some on way home. Checked oil, saw no water on stick. pulled thermostst & put in boiling water didn't see it open. New thermostat, still heats up. ( noticed by temp guage thermostatwas opining but temp slowly rose.)
Checked oil again; this time stick full of water. Either blew a head gasket or heat warped head, hoping 4 the former when I get head pulled. Sooo Comet goes on back burner til I fix Ranger. by the way its a 2.3L 95. Kind of a pain to work on, but not imposssible. Hate to put off Comet, but need the Ranger working...... Jan

Sorry to hear of your woes, but If it turns into being a warped head keep this in mind. I have seen alot of the over head cam aluminum heads that are warped get resurfaced and put back on,and then a few months later the cam shaft/shafts break. I felt like you might want to know this(the problem is the whole head warps and throughs the cam jurnals out of alignment) just some food for thought........

I don't know that its warped yet? Chances are it probably is. This thing had been a solid runner and reliable, so I probably wasn't paying enough attention to temp guage. IT got hot though, how hot I don't know as these new guages just have markers for C a braket and H. Trbl is I've got my place for sale and don't need all these problems at thiss time. Amazing how we can make these problems bigger than they are..... tks 4 ur input.. Jan

Actually the 4R100 Trannys are'nt all that bad:) the main problem they had was the lockup system.......luckily the after market companys came up with a solution;) to do away with the PWM part of it and we shift kit all of the 4R100 and the E4OD's these are the Main units I build well that and the A4LD's:( now they are junk:mad: it's kinda sad I don't get to build many c4's or 6's:(

Removed head and its not warped and its not aluminum. Th cause of this was upper radiator bolt missing, allowing upper hose to rub against a/c clutch and it took the hose out. These new cars/trucks a pain. Had to make a tool to loosen timing belt tensioner, Autozone didn't have the loaner tool. I'll take the older vehicles to work on any day. Jan
