I have a problem. I need to know which way the oil slinger goes onto the crank snout. I already installed it (thank god its still being built and can easily be addressed and corrected). I have it on the front of the crank sprocket with the small bowled part in the opening for the harmonic balancer. I fear this is quite wrong and i need to know if it should really go behind the crank gear with the back part of the crank gear in the bowled part of the oil slinger. Thanks all, Kyle B.
According to a book I have, "Install the crankshaft sprocket first. then the oil slinger. The top of the hat (as in top hat) goes against the sprocket-and engaged with the key" Russ
Install it if it makes you feel better but is no longer needed by about 20 years. Reason it was used originally was the poor seal material used when the engines were built to keep excessive oil out of the seal area and give a longer life before leaks developed. If you look at your new seal it should be a fine neoprene, so the slinger has little value any longer.
yep I left my slinger out and haven't had a bit of trouble. One less bit of tin spinning around I guess.
