i've put in the dII distributer and after playing with it I got it to run but it would run shitty. So, before I was planning on leaving for the meet I wantinted to fix the problem, I pulled the distributer and lined up the timing marks, put it back in, lined everything up and at the most I've gotten it to run but only after advancing the plug wires once.or it might have been backwards.but i can't figure it out. and i missed the meet.please help:confused:

I may be telling you something you already know, but here goes.

This is the way "I", personally would make certain the distributor is in correctly:

    1) Rotate the crank, either by hand or 'bumping' the starter until it gets close to Top Dead Center (TDC marking on harmonic balancer) then rotate the crank using a socket and break-over bar to get it right on the TDC mark.

    2) Remove the distributor cap and note the location of the rotor.
It should be pointing to the number 1 cylinder's plug wire terminal (at distributor). If the rotor isn't pointed to #1 remove the distributor from the block enough to turn the rotor backwards or forwards so that when the distributor rides down the gears (spiral) it points to number one after seating.

    3) If the car still doesn't crank (or backfires, etc) the distributor is probably 180 degrees out of timing (common occurance) . You can correct this in a couple of ways; a) Remove the distributor again and rotate the rotor 180 degress OPPOSITE the #1 cylinder plug wire, or; b) rotate the crank 180 degrees back to the TDC indicator on the balancer and re-adjust the location of the rotor to number 1 cylinder's plug wire terminal (at distributor cap).

    4) WHEN it runs long enough to adust your timining, remove the vacuum line from the distributor and rotate the distributor until you have it 'in time'. (10 degrees before TDC for V-8?? or whatever it is for your engine). Lock it down (while the engine is running if possible). Recheck the timing if the engine was turned off to tighten the distributor hold-down bolt.

    5) Replace the vacuum line hose.

    6) Rejoice

I really hope this helps. Otherwise I'll come back and delete this mesage!!

    Re: runs now but...

1st off, what did it take to get it running to begin with (could be a clue as to what the ticking sound is)?

    Re:Ticking
Depends on where it's coming from and what sound.
(can you post a .wav file?) :)

If it sounds like it's on the top side of the engine, it could be that a valve isn't working properly (sticking, bent push rod, not adjusted correctly, etc).

If it sounds like it's OUTside of the engine, it's probably a bad (broken) spark-plug wire and is jumping to ground.

It could be something as simple as your PCV valve???

If it sounds like its INSIDE the engine, well.....uh.....I think you know what all that might involve.

Try to locate the sound ( is it only inside one bank of cylinders only? both (if V8)? Is it near the bottom of the engine or top? etc.

Again, let us know how you got the timing (or 1st problem) fixed and what the 'ticking' noise was.

    It helps all of us.
