Hi guys, After much deliberation, I've decided to repair some of the rust on my Jeep's rocker panels and the bottoms of the doors. After I started grinding the paint off, I realized this was gonna be a bigger project, because the rust gave way to gaping holes. After visiting the local Autozone, I bought 5 cans of gloss black rustoleum paint, bondo, and mesh patches for the holes. After wet-sanding the paint (after spending 4 hours putting bondo on and smoothing) I washed the area to be painted, waited for it to dry, then started painting. Well, for some reason, the paint didn't stick very well. It ran all over the place and "orange peeled" on some of the plastic trim pieces and some areas of metal. I've never had this happen before. So then I re-sanded everything again and painted it once more. The paint seems to be holding much better but it's still orange peeling in some places. I'm at a loss for why this happened... Personally, I don't care that much if it doesn't look that great. It's meant to give it some color and stop the rust from getting worse. But I'd like to know what I did wrong so this doesn't happen again. Here's some pics of the result...
Grease...Wax...Debris from the road like diesle fuel etc...Those are called fish eyes. The bain of painters every where. You should have cleaned the entire area with a good prep solvent before even touching sand paper to the body.
Is this canned spray paint? Did you leave it outside to equalize the temperature of the paint to the vehicle, before spraying? Spraying cool ( stored in ac environment ) paint can do this if it's humid and hot where you're putting it on! Water will form and cause this too.
ITs tough to get that plastic cladding clean of silicone etc. If they have been armor all'd in the past you likely picked it up during your process and wiped it all over. Like Pete said you need a good high quality prep solvent and you still may not get that trim clean. Its very porous.
Bingo. I didn't think I needed primer because I figured sanding the paint would be enough. I did the other side awhile ago and this time I used primer. Paint came out perfect in every way! So after spending 2 hours sanding the previous side, I primed it then painted it. Just finished putting the last coat of clear on and it looks pretty awesome!
I also plan on painting the bumpers and plastic trim around the bumpers black. I think it'll look nice.
