I currently have my gage cluster out but it is plugged into the wiring connector. The engine currently is not in a condition to run. I have a fully battery charged battery. The interior light comes on when the door is open. When I insert the key and turn the key to the first pre-start position, the seat buzzer will come on and two gage lights light up. When I turn on the headlights, they come on firm and the high beam indicator works. The problem is the remaining gage lights will not come on. To complicate matters am trying LED lights and am trying to reverse their polarity with no success. My next step is to change them all back to incandescent lights but I thought I’d ask for any other ideas first. The light switch rheostat works as the light on the temp control is working and dims with the rheostat. Any ideas? Thanks. Maverick Dude
Got my problem solved. Only 3 bulbs light up the gage cluster. All three LED’s happened to have reversed polarity so I changed them around. Works now. Thanks for reading this.
Just for interest, aside from the three lights that provide light to see the gages, there is a high beam indicator plus 7 “trouble “ lights. One is the alternator and one is the oil pressure indicator. I’m not sure what the other 5 spaces are for on the trouble lights. I guess one is high temp. Right now it does not light up when the key is in the accessory position. I’ll see what I can do on that.
With ign on the oil pressure light should be on, temp & brake only while cranking. Also probably a seat belt light that has no function.
Also, my alternator light is on along with the oil light. I’ll watch for the others next time I crank it. Thanks.
Here are two pics with a bit of useful info. The first one shows the cluster coming out off to the passenger side with the gear shift in gear one to get it out of the way. One would have to have the key turned in the ignition to unlock the column. ( no issue with floor shifted models. ) The second shot shows that after the cluster is out and you change bulbs or if you install LED bulbs, you can check to see if the polarity is correct on the LED bulbs by plugging the electrical connector back into the cluster. It’s long enough if you place the cluster on the driver’s side of the steering wheel.
Thanks Krazy. I noticed now that the seat belt light and comes on when the tranny is put in gear, even with the engine off. First shot is with the tranny in park: oil and alternator. 2nd shot is with the tranny in gear: oil, alternator and seat belt. This is on a 73 LDO.
So while cranking, starting at 9:00 position, temp, oil, charge, seatbelt, brake. I now confirmed all my idiot lights work and have fresh “ 194 “ bulbs.
