I've been trying to get the right belt set up on my car for awhile now. Here's what I have : Crank pulley with two grooves- Alt. with two grooves- and the water pump pulley has one groove. I put new brackets on the alt. and the belt hits the bracket before it goes on the alt. I think if I could use the front goove on the crank and alt. I would be all set. But The water pump pulley seams as if it is too long(groove is in too far towards the water pump). So I'm starting to think I have the wrong water pump pulley. It is part Number D1-8509-AA. If anyone has the correct pulley set up could you take a look and see what the part number is on the water pump pulley? The number is on the outside of the "snout" . I'm pretty sure the brackets are right. but I could be wrong. Thanks Russ

I went through the same thing when I put the 289 in my Grabber. I experimented with 3 pulleys before I got it right!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I was told there are different waterpumps available for the 302. Some are longer (shaft end to gasket). As I recall my waterpump was longer and I need a pulley with more "backspacing".

Even the alternator bracket effected the location of the pulley alignment. Do you have the alternator "swivel" bolt (the long one), threaded directly into the head or does the bolt go into a cast bracket that is mounted on the head?

Doug I have the bolt into the cast alum. piece that bolts to the head. There are two type of alt brackets that I know of. One is smaller than the other with a triangle shaped hole in the center of it, Ford part #C6OE-10156-A and the other more square shaped one D2OE-10156-BA. Which is the one I'm useing I think I can get away with using the outer groove on the alt. and the inner one on the crank pulley. If I do this the Alt belt will clear the bracket. The pulley that I have measures about 2 7/8 OAL. I would need one about half that to work. thanks. Russ

The cast bracket for my alternator is triagular.

As I recall, I think the one I have on my289 is a very shallow pulley like 1-3/4". I'll look tomorrow in better daylight.

I'm using the squarer shaped bracket also.

On edit above. The Alumin bracket is triangle shaped, but the alt bracket(that bolts to the water pump looks "flatter" than the other one that wont work. The only holes in the one I'm using are for the bolts. Part # D2OE-10156-A Thanks. Russ
