i was gong to put my dome lite in today and a thought hit me. i have my new headliner in and the wire for the dome lite is under it. the ?? is will i need a wire that is hot at all times for the map lite part. if so what would be a good way to run this wire? could i run the one wire and operate the map lite from the light switch?
turn the dome lite on at the switch. that would make the map lite switches hot and then turn them on and off there. right??? thanks for any help...frank...:bananaman :bananaman L.T.N.G.

It takes a different wiring harness. I change mine while the headliner was out. :D

Dont they also have different mounting locations? I believe the holes are in brace in the roof but you have to put in the plastic inserts in the correct holes.

Dennis is correct. Again....best to do with the headliner out.

You can still do it with the headliner in...it is just not as easy. :)

I got the harness out of a junkyard Lincoln. Remove the original dome lamp. Don't forget to pull the domelight fuse otherwise you will probably make some sparks! :) Carefully remove the driver's side weatherstrip. You should be able to carefully peel the edge of the headliner away from the edge where the weatherstrip windlace pushes on. I used a wire coat hanger that I unwound and taped the end of the harness to one end of it and pushed it under the headliner to the hole in the middle where the dome light will mount.

The other end of the wire is a little trickier. At the top of the "A" pillar to the left of the driver there is a hole that the original harness passes through and ends up down by the dome light door switch. Probably the easiest way to run the new harness through there is to securely tape the end of the new harness to the top end of the old harness(really just one black wire with a dark blue stripe) (after pulling it through the headliner from where it terminated near the dome light) and pull the new harness through the "A" pillar by pulling the original black and blue wire from the bottom end. You will end up with a green wire with a yellow stripe(constant power) and a black wire with a blue stripe(the dome light). You don't really even need the original harness..you could use a wire with a small eyelet spliced on the dome light end.

You will have to drill some new holes to mount the new dome/map light. I did in my '72...but I seem to remember later Mavs may already have the proper holes. There will be 2 holes that actually mount the light, but also there are 2 spots where the hot wires mount to the light assembly with short screws. You will have to drill holes behind them so that they do not short to ground.

This sounds really hard when it is written out like this, but it really is can be done! Here is a picture of the results:
