Hello all. I'm a new member and I have a 74 Comet GT. I have owned the car since 77 installed 4spd in 78, headers and 4 barrel in 79, took it off road in 85, built new motor and restored all mech in 96 about 5k worth, I have about 2,000 miles on it now I didn't do the electricial system and am having trouble with that. I have the ignition and starter system by-passed and am using toggle switchs. The points don't seem to be getting spark and are heating up. Any ideas.

first thing that comes to my mind is that something that isnt supposed to be, is grounded. You have a frayed wire on a connection somewhere? Easy way to check this is to take negative battery cable off, then if you have system in the ready to start mode, connect the negative battery cable to the battery again and if you see an arc from the battery terminal to the battery, it is probable of a ground that aint supposed to be.

Better make sure you dont have 12 volts running through the points . They defineatly dont like that . There is a resistor in your wiring somewhere ( somebody here will know where it is ) thatm drops down the voltage to your points when running . Escpecially sinse you have modified switches for ignition and starter .

    Thanks Dan and Lightning.
Dan I have not found the short in the key switch yet but there is one and still looking for it I may need to buy a new wiring harness, that's a good way to find out if you have a short.
Lightning your'e right that is why I didn't have juice in the points. The points and condenser where fried from to much juice when I was able to use the key switch there is a resistor wire in line that reduces the juice to about the 9 volt range. I put a resistor in line and new points and condenser and I now have juice.
Would anyone know where I can find a wiring diagram for this car.
