I received my 73 Maverick around 10 days ago. Together with the car I found in the seat some invoices. I checked them and found out that on the last service engine oil was changed. I'm a bit surprised to see that the oil is some 10W30 synthetic. The engine looks stock and not rebuilt, and as far as I know in those engines we use mineral oil with 15w40, 20w40,20w50, depends the season or where you live. Also, is Motorcraft FL1A is ok for my engine? ( now Firestone TF8A).
Fl-1A is fine... Why do you want to put that 20W-50 goop in it??? Depending on temp ranges, back in the day Ford recommended from 5W-30 to 20W-40(Synthetic was yet to be marketed)... Assuming temps are generally above freezing, these days I use 10W30, 10W-40 or maybe 15W-40... If it's tight enough that it doesn't burn or leak the 10W-30 synthetic, I'd keep using it, better oil than the dino... One of the best off the shelf oils is 0W-40 Mobil 1...
Agree. FL-1A is considered to be a go0d filter. 10-30 is common in North America and for France's weather, will be fine. Synthetic is a personal choice. I use it in my tow vehicle year round and use it in all my vehicles in the cold Canadian winters. MD
I read a few times that synthetic oil is not very good for old seals we have in our engines (not rebuilt ones). SO ok I will continue this way with 10W30 synthetic. Thanks.
I dunno about oils in France but there is still as much zinc in today's oils as there was in early/mid 1960s... That ran somewhere around 700 ppm, I believe today's limit for 0W-20 thru 5W-30 is 750 ppm, which is enough for a mild cam with stock springs(other grades can be higher)... Levels increased to around 1200 ppm as wiped cams became a issue in HI-Po engines... Here's what Mobil 1 has(one of few that has easy to find specs). https://mobiloil.com/~/media/amer/us/pvl/files/pdfs/mobil-1-oil-product-specs-guide.pdf
Is Lucas oil is famous in US? http://lucasoil-motor.com/fr/huile-...haute-performance-5-litres-0049807101282.html
Lucas is marketed as a high-end oil but I've never seen anything to prove it's better than Mobil 1. MD
At last service in US, they fill up with 10W30 oil. I can't find this grade here so I will go with synthetic 10W40 from Mobil. I would like to know the % of zinc inside. Is that a good compromise? https://www.mobil.com/English-GB/Passenger-Vehicle-Lube/pds/GLXXMobil-Super-2000-X1-10W40
Try google "zinc content in Mobil 1 oil". However, why not try the Castrol line of products. I often use Castrol oil in Canada. What are the predominant oil brands in France? MD
You don't need a zinc additive on an old stock engine. It's been running just fine all this time without it.
According to your info the Mobil Super 2000 is a semi-synthetic oil. Mobil 1 is a full-synthetic oil and is better but more expensive. The Mobil 2000 would work fine. If you want to spend more money use Mobil 1. Just my opinion. MD
