Currently have a problem with my stereo. Stereo/Amp/Speakers work fine when the engine is not running. Now when I start the car, all all I get is an erratic static sound about 1/2 second apart, no sound, and my amp gauge is bouncing around like crazy. Needless to say, I drive around with no sounds (music). This problem only recently started, never had it before.
Check your grounds .... also ... ground your engine block to the firewall with a strap. Make sure your Head Unit isn't grounding through the speakers or antenna ...
is your amp powering all your speakers? or is it just the radio power your using? things you might wanna check beside the ground is your RCAs and your power turn on line to the amp. the way your route those lines can make all the differance in the world.
With the cold weather coming (I hate snow being from SoCal), I've been busy setting up the garage (heater/insulation, etc.) and will once again be working on the Mav. This is when I'll reinstall the stereo. My plans are to get a 8" posi third member, have the trans rebuilt, heads reworked and a short block (mild performance).
Do you hear the noise just when listening to the radio or all of the time? If it's just on the radio the noise can be coming in through the antenna. If you hear it all the time it's probably coming in through a power wire. Different methods needed to take care of each type of problem. A whining noise is usually from the alternator, static is often ignition related . Have also seen where other electric motors found in a car can cause noise in a power wire; wiper motor, heater/AC motor, cruise control, etc. High impedance input wires to to an auxillary amplifier can be sensitive to how/where they're routed.
