Why does a exhaust leak make a car run worse? I thought that the more exhaust that could get out the better. I know that on motorcycles it will throw off the jetting, is it the same on cars?

some cars rely on/need the back pressure. I have heard many times that if you open up your exhaust to wide, then you can lose torque. I suppose the same would apply for a major exhaust leak.
