Hello all. I've seen and read many posts about the 5.0 Explorer swap into a Comet/Falcon etc. I'm wondering how it works when you swap it all - i.e. fuel injection, electronic ignition, computer etc.? I'm not using the automatic transmission. So how does the set up work properly when there are transmission sensors that aren't connected, abs sensors that aren't connected, downstream oxygen sensors that aren't connected etc.? Does it properly control fuel with downstream O2 sensors either not connected or just stuck in the exhaust with no catalytic converters in front of them? If the Explorer that the parts come out of has antitheft then wouldn't that be an issue? Seems to me there would be many issues - but seems like a lot of people do it - so hoping someone has some detailed information or can give me some direction. I want to put a 5.0 in a 1960 comet with a Tremec 5 speed. I'm putting a mustang 2 front end in so should be no clearance issues i.e. shock towers etc. will be removed.
This forum is for the '70-'77 Ford Maverick and the '71-'77 Mercury Comet. It looks like you have a '60 Comet. You will probably need to find a forum that covers that year Comet. Good luck!
But there is a section on this forum that covers 60- 69 Comets in the Other Automotive & Tech Talk and in general he is just wanting info on what to do with computer functions when installing a late model 5.0 so others here should have info that would help
Your best bet may be poke around on a Sploder forum and find out who their favorite "tuner" is... They may have canned tunes that disables PATs, tells computer to ignore downstream o2 sensors, missing transmission solenoids etc... Also I'd check to see when PATs was implemented on Explorer, I know the Crown Vic & Grand Marquis didn't have that feature till '98 so you may find similar for Explorer... I've used 194 bulbs as load to trick a Turbo Coupe PCM to think it was still shifting the A4LD, dunno if that works with later 'puters or not... Then you may find one with 5 speed(mebby I'm thinking of V6 models?) that doesn't have PATs, then theoretically you'd only need the o2 eliminators that AFAIK just plug in place of sensor...
I would skip the stock electronics and control it with Fox Mustang pieces. There is way more support and it's a proven performer.
if using stock electronics i would stick to the eec4 and not eec5. better yet ditch the oem. i went with a fast ezefi retro.. or go fitech or something like that.,
It might seem expensive at first to toss the original stuff but in the end you'll be farther ahead. I started out with the grand plan of making the harness from a 94 Bronco work for my car. I bought wiring diagrams, spent hours goofing around pulling out the unnecessary circuits and researching potential problems with using the Explorer intake in place of the truck manifold. I was close to done, lost interest and moved on to other parts of the project when I found a complete standalone Fox setup from Pro M for $400. If you look you can find a good deal and be money ahead compared to making the Explorer electronics work. Much less headache too!
