I posted this in off topic also. then i found this area. anyway here is the story. my son-inlaw had this 97 f-150, 4.6ltr- had a code pop up indicating EGR valve, so we replaced it. code came back, so i cleaned the ports as they where very clogged. code came back, so i replaced the DPSE sensor. code came back, so i replaced the vacume lines to the sensor. code came back. i need to get this figured out as this is my only form of transportation. tags expired 7-31-10. cant renew until i pass emissions test. cant pass test untill i get that code knocked out. can anyone PLEASE help me? im out of money so i cant take it to a dealer for the repairs. please shoot me some info. thank you all Rick.
Yup...EGR solinoid is bad or vacuum signal hose to it is leaking... Also, slim but possible chance that harness to solinoid has broken wire... Good luck!!!
red line is manifold vac green line is egr vac when pcm comands the soleniod it open egr check vac line at soleniod for cracks at rubber fittings
Found the problem, the truck had been in an accident prior to me buying it. the vacume canister is directly behind the pass fender. it has holes in it that im going to try and plug.
if fixing those holes doesnt fix it, and it think it will try this. ford calibrates the dpse sensor to the egr valve. the aftermarket valves and sensors usually dont assemble to the factory spec. i once glued a thin pice of card board to the tip of the sensor to get it to have the right reading. gota love aftermarket junk. not.
This must be a popular problem. Both my 02 Focus and 00 Windstar are throwing the same code right now.
Its common enough that ford released a service msg a couple years ago to just replace the dpfe with no diag.
i just realized that the sensor has changed from the one i referenced. sorry for the missinformation. the one that i refereced was a position sensor that was right on the egr valve. yours should be the one with the two hoses going to it. once again im sorry. good luck with it.
ALL IS WELL! after tracing down every vacuum line that had something to do with the egr system, i found a vacuum cannister under the passenger fender. someone had a fender bender with this truck. the vac can had three holes in it from the ccident. someone also tried to plug holes with electrical tape. dont ask me why. any way, after i dropped out the can- plugged all holes- cleared all codes- drove 20 miles- no codes! passed emissions and all is well. Thanks to all who helped. this really is a great web site!!! Thanks to stefan.
