flexplate???

    good morning boys and girls, could someone 'splain how the plate works and the diff. between the 28.2 oz. and the 50 oz. and the 0 oz. balance. and maybe a suggestion for my motor. my motor is a 72' 302 small cam, flat top, .030 over, 600 holley, eld. 289 performer intake, pertronix ignitor ignition, stock exh. manifolds, c4 tranny with 2.79 rear gear. thanks for any help...frank...:bananaman :bananaman L.T.N.G.

    i'm sure you'll get some more info from others but from the experience i've had. there are 2 size flexplates, 157 and 164 tooth. small or large bellhousing. the bellhousing on the tranny can be changed. also the engine plate needs to match. this is what the starter bolts to. go with the smaller of the two if you have a choice. seems to have less problems with headers. the weights have to do with the vibration dampers. a book i have states "when the engine is running torque spikes occur with each power stroke. tortional vibrations can damage a crank and bearings. windsor engines are externally balanced. this means that balance weight is added or subtracted at the damper or flywheel. in 1981 ford made a change from 28.2 oz to 50 oz. while dampers or flywheels interchange, don't mix pre 81 with post 81 or the engine will suffer an imbalance." if you want to keep the earlier look on a later model motor there are aftermarket parts to do this too. hope this helps a little. i'm sure others on here can give you a lot more info.:)
