so my buddy has a 1983 ford f-150 and it came from the factory with the variable venturie carb. it hadn't been rebuilt in over 10 years and he was having carb problems. my dad who was a ford mechanic told me that if you don't have the proper tools then i would never get that carb to run right. so we rebuilt the carb that was on my comet and put it on his truck. it's just a standard 2 barel carb from the mid 70's. it came off of a 75 granada with a 351w. so i got it on his truck and it seemed to be running just fine. the choke seemed to be working and it seemed to have plenty of power. he went today to start it up and drive it and make sure it was running good. it started up just fine but as he goes to take off there is no power and it kinda sputters. he had to give it alot of gas to get it to go up hill to his house. i haven't had a chance to go check it out yet but was wondering if you guys had any ideas of what might be going on. i was thinking something with the choke is the problem. i really can't think of anything else that would cause this problem.
well i think i figured out what the problem is. i was doing some searching on the internet and found out that the 83 ford f150 has a sort of computer in it and if you remove the carb with the tps on it and replace it without one the computer doesn't know what to do so it screws with the timing. so i need to replace the ignition system with a duraspark II set up and it will fix the problem. it completley isolates the computer and it doesn't do anything anymore.
