Hey guys/ladies can anyone tell me where i can find some slim design speakers that will fit in my kick plate on my 77 mav, i found a web site on here before but i lost it, thanks tommyboy)
See my pics under technical. I used 6.5's and had to expand the metal hole under the kick panels a little bit. It was easy with my $9 harbor freight cut off tool. Here is a link Interior Done, except steering wheel-pics - Ford Maverick / Mercury Comet Foru
Glad you started this thread. I have a 75 Mav and want to put some better speakers in the kick panels. I don't want to do any cutting. Any good speakers that will work?
I think you will be happier with the indash install of a dual voice coil speaker. Do a search for the thread I wrote about it.
The opening behind the kick panel is tiny. I dont think you will get a good speaker to fit in there without some cutting. The speakers I put in are 6.5" and only needed to trim an inch or so.
if any will fit it will be the shallow infinity speakers. crutchfield.com Check them out there then shop it around at best buy or your local audio shop for a better price. crutchfield is overpriced a lot.
I have Sony Xplode speakers in the front kick panels of my '72, and my main complaint having them there is I have to crank the fade to the front more then the rear in order to balance out the sound. Otherwise, the rear speakers drown out the front ones, and it sounds like all the sound is coming from the back speakers, can hardly even hear the fronts. That creates another problem, in that if you crank the volume up some, the front speakers are working much harder then the rears, so the sound starts to get distorted pretty easily.
I agree with Jamie on having to put the fader to the front some but I only have to do it 1-2 notches and it balances out fine. I have a pioneer HU with 6 1/2" 180w 3-way speakers up front and 6x9 AC Delco speakers in the rear out of a 99 olds alero. I know they are GM but they are great for factory speakers and they are CHEAP!
You want to match your speakers as closely as possible to avoid this. Higher wattage speakers will be less effecient that low wattage speakers. If you put low wattage speakers in the rear deck and competition speakers or just a nice high power handling set the others will drown you out. Also the deflection of the rear window seams to bounce the sound up front radically. I built custom kick panels and my speakers air aimed so that i dont have the problem but i dont think you should if you have a matched set of speakers.
i put a 6.5 in sony xplode speaker in the dash where the original speaker was its was pretty easy just had to make 2 small brackets i had some speakers in the kick panels but i cut the panels up to put em in ....now i need to get new kick panels it sounds pretty good in the dash i guess it just depends how loud you want your system im doing good with 2 6X9s and that 6.5
My speakers are a matched set of Sony Xplodes. It seems to have more to do with acoustics then the speakers themselves. The rear speakers are aiming up at the window which acts like a bullhorn, while the fronts are aiming at the transmission tunnel, which does no good. In my '73, I'm going to either put the front speakers in the top of the dash or behind the grilles on either side of the package tray under the dash. My '80 Capri RS has the speakers in the top of the dash aiming at the windshield, and it sounds very good and balanced. I listen to mostly rock music like Metallica (ironically, "wherever I may roam" by Metallica is coming on the radio as I typed that), so I don't really care about a big booming system, I just want it to sound tight and balanced.
Kick panel speakers Do you have any pics of the custom kick panels you built? I would like to see how you got around the parking brake, and the headlamp dimmer!
Another tip about front speakers ... the metal behind the kick panels was changed to accommodate speakers in the later Mavs/Comets. I want to say that this happened in 73 or 74 and there are factory kick panels that have a speaker grille built in, so it all looks factory. I think they take 5 1/4 inch speakers. I have had a 71 and my current 72 Comet and both of them took some metal surgery to make room for speaker magnets. In both cases, I surface-mounted speakers to the kick panel. My 72 has 4 inch Infinitys. I am probably going to add a plate with two more front speakers in-dash, too. I am running two 6x9s under the rear metal deck ( the factory holes aren't 6x9 ! ... grrrrr) and a modest amp to them.I took the package tray, created openings for the speakers and then covered the entire package tray with speaker cloth. I left some "ribs" in the speaker opening so that the cloth would not sag. It looks pretty trick.
