Fuel tank sending unit

Hi everyone. I was wondering how to check too see if my sending unit is bad. Do I just unplug it and ground plug? If the gas gauge shows full when grounded will that mean sending unit is bad? Thanks

 

Grounding plug is one way, if gauge pegs problem is no doubt in tank...

Note never leave one grounded longer than just a quick check, otherwise the calibration of gauge can be effected...

 

Thanks Krazy Comet. I'll give it a shot here tomorrow or monday. I'm hoping its the sending unit.

Gauge on dash doesn't read anything

 

I just had this happen. I pumped the tank down, removed the pick-up / sender assembly to find the brass float had a hole in it. Repaired the float, reinstalled it, added gas and now all is well.
