Okay She's been giving me headaches this weekend...I have a holley electirc fuel pump...I watched my fuel pressure drop from 9 psi to 6 psi and I shot her off. Got her back to the house and began examing it. I could hear it sucking air so I hoped it was the inlet or outlet seals. I redid those with some thread tape and the noise stopped. Also checked the ground and replaced the connection. The noies went away and presto I had 11 psi fuel pressure. Then I took her out again. And the fuel pressure dropped back to 8 psi by the time I got home! I cleaned out the fuel filter and found rust !! So I'm guessing that little rust flakes are clogging the pump. Is there any way to remove the fuel tank and clean it or should I just go with a racing fuel cell ?? I already have a full race cage and drag seats so keeping a stock look or losing trunk space isn't a probelm. Any one have any suggestions ? I'm still new to the whole diagnosing problems...just trying to reason my way through it. Thanks !!

    Gas Tank Rust Problem

I had the same problem in a 56 Chevy I had several years ago. What I did to get rid of the rust and clean out my tank was to take it to an engine rebuilder with a hot tank and I had it dipped and stripped. It came out looking like new. It cost about $35.00 to do and well worth the money. I had no more problems of any kind with the fuel system.

I'm redoing a 75 Grabber that has been sitting for awhile and will do the same with it's fuel tank. It's the only way I know of to really clean out the inside of rust.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks I'll begin checking around. I've been looking into a fuel cell and it looks like it may be a chore to get it all set up. So I was considering trying to find another donar car for a tank. Didn't realize I could have mine fixed. Thanks for the advice. I'll begin looking for a shop in the area that can do it. Thanks Again!

I have a couple of good tanks if your looking for one. I usually get $75 for one. I could bring it down in Jan and save you the shipping but I would suggest converting to a Mustang tank.

Would it still need to be stripped ? And what all would be required to switch to a Mustang Tank ? These may seem like stupid questions but I'm just learning as I go....Thanks!

The tanks I have are clean on the inside. At least they were when I pulled them. If your interested I will throughly check them out before I sell them. Check out this link to use a Mustang tank. Its a worth while mod. BTW, the pictures used in the article are my Sprint

    Mavaholic,

Thanks! I'm going to try the Tank Restorer kit from Eastwood..I've heard really good things about it from a few people. So I"ll see what happens. I'll still keep the tanks from you in mind and I'll let you know one way or the other before Jan.

Also the only reason I was hesitant on the Mustang swap is my lack of welding knowledge (or non-exsistance) and welding equipement. However, a generous friend offered to help me and teach me to use his equipement so that may be in the near future! I"m still young and learning plus I'm always up for learning anything that will help with fixing cars! Thanks for the link. I'll let you know how things work out. Right now I have 15 gallons of High Test to use up....Look out Highway here I come :D
