Instead of building a workbench, I think you need to build a bigger shop. :) I'll be moving soon and the house I am buying has a big barn. From the measurements I have taken, when I get finished converting it to a garage, I'll be able to get 6 cars inside with plenty of working room, 8 cars packed. :29:

Can't it be on wheels? At the head helps for opening doors and at the sides helps for engine pulling space... I have one I can put at the door opening or between the cars. I like having it at the opening for outside lighting and fresh air.

i have a 6' metal desk that used to be in a telephone central office. a 4' wooden bench that i used to use for reloading, another workbench with metal drawers and a 4' wooden top and another roll top toolbox with an empty top. also a 2 tiered cart that moves around and i still don't have enough work benches.

    Going through that myself

I am about to insulate/sheetrock my garage. I saw a show on TV last year about ultimate workshops. It recommended a series of fold down work benches as opposed to big heavy benches that usually end up as storage tables. It sounded like a good idea. I may try it. These benches were hinged with fold out supports for legs. The legs can be made to lock with pins.

I like that idea. I'll have to look into that for my new shop. :)

the tabletop/bartop/bench thingie in my lounge area I have set up like that so if I need the extra space I can fold it up into the wall.

right now its holding the blower, injector, and a bunch of drawings as I'm trying to sort it all out as I build.:) but its great for sitting there relaxing and having a soda break.

I just "acquired" a huge metal shelf(6 racks) from one of our old wharehouses.

This should finish my stuff for the garage....I did not know of this acquasition until about 30 minutes ago :D
That along with my workbench I have now should be plenty :yup:

    That's cool!

I have a steel bench along a whole wall in my shop that I acquired from Pep Boys waiting room. It's red powder coated steel circular grating. They were getting new couches and let me have them. When the district mngr found out about the couch purchases he was poed. They asked me for the seats back and I told them I did'nt have any help unloading them at home and I did'nt have any help to reload them. I live about 68 mi from there and no one wanted to come help so...O well. I think they will come in handy if anyone were to come visit the Comet and I.:D

I keep a 5 ft workbench. Any surface allows me to leave junk around, and with me painting I try to avoid any clutter. I also use a big old metal desk for files and I use the top of it for a desk, as well as working on small parts etc. 8 ft bench would be great if you wanted to keep a vice on it. If you dont intend to keep a vice, keep the bench shorter. I use saw horses alot. Keeps things neater.

To make the most of your space, you might want to think about getting the car up on casters too, so that when it's not running you can still move it around the garage to make a little more room here and there. That's my next project.
