I can not for the life of me find information on this modification.

What I would like to do is put the headunit in my maverick on a relay.

If you have ever been in a newer gm truck (never been in a gm car) you may have noticed when you turn the key off all of you accesories work til you open a door. This is what I want to happen in the maverick more or less.

So would someone know a certain relay I could use to turn my headunit on and off this way. My plan would be to use the power lead on the courtesy lamp in the as the power source to trip the relay and turn my headunit off.

I really dont know how to describe this online so ask questions! :thumbs2:

    I don't know if it's that simple.
Not only does the radio shut off when you open a door, but it also shuts off after a certain amount of time. So there is a timer involved.
The time is different for different vehicles/year models, and some could be set for a custom amount of time.

Try this link and scroll about 3/4 down while looking for "Radio On Until Door Opened (Retained Accessory Power)." (y) Check out the rest of the site too. You might find something else you wanna do later.

This could easily be done with a couple of relays available from any auto store.

Its funny you posted this...I just found the 12.com page last week and assembled the relay circuit found on that page...I can report that it works perfectly. :) You just need a negative trigger to break the latch and shut everything off...if you want you could even build in a timer that sends out a negative pulse after so many minutes...

    That is so cool!
I figured it was some complex system built into the radio or chassis computer.

I need a little more lernin' in lectrical terms to get those diagrams on that link totally.
However, they look neat and I can think of lots of things to do with the ones that are elementary enough for me to read.

    Thanks for the link!

I'm using a rack of relays from a Dodge Caravan to do my electrical needs. It kinda looks more factory (I know, wrong factory) than a bunch of store bought relays. I got less than $10 invested in 5 relays and the mount at Pull-a-Part. If you go the junkyard route be sure to cut as much wire as possible to help in splicing more wire

My 99 F150 does it , too. Radio and power windows will work for 30 minutes after you cut off the key as long as you don't open a door.
