Does anybody know if the hole size required for a grabber spoiler is the same diameter of the metal studs or does the whole plastic insert on the spoiler need to fit through the trunklid? Also, I am wondering if new holes have to be drilled in the quater panels at each end of the rear valence panel when doing a large to small bumper conversion. I have searched the archives and have learned quite a bit about the conversion process. However I am a little unsure about the rear valence. It looks like a bolt or stud is slipped in and locked at each end and the hole is drilled in the quater panel. Thanks,
On the two door the whole fiberglass piece needs to fit,a 1" hole. I never heard of anyone putting one on a four door,(not saying You can't just never heard of it)
It sounds like your putting the small bumper on as well. Is this true? Are you putting this spoiler on a 4 door? If so I would not drill 1 inch holes because the trunk lip that the spoiler goes over is not there. The 4dr lip is shaved off. Therefore, the trunk is not going to conform to the backside of the spoiler. The U shaped washers are not going to work on the 4 door lid so you will have to come up with something of your own design. I would start out by just drilling holes as large as the studs on the spoiler and test fit it on to see how it is going to seat. You can always go larger if you need to but its a bear trying to make them smaller. As far as the valance, there is a stud at each end that you will have to drill a hole to receive them. Its a bitch getting them correct but then, its on a flat srrface so you can always make them bigger and use a fender washer.
Yes, the bumper conversion is on a 2dr. I had obtained the bumpers, brackets, fillers and trunk lid from various donor cars over the years and forget how the were originally installed. The holes for the spoiler are approx 1" past the lip on the side of the trunk lid, correct? good advice on drilling holes for the studs first. Also, is it about 1/4" bolt on each side of the rear valence? Mine is missing the studs, just has the bracket on the valence. the valence panel seems to be under a bit of tension as it "wraps" around the tank. Also had to cut and install an aftermarket exhaust tip and lower the stock muffler to get a reasonable exit behind and below the valence panel. In order to keep body modifications to a minimium, I am considering installing 1 1/2" angle iron inside the trunk as bumper reinforcement. What do you folks think, considering the weight of the small bumper and brackets? Someone years down the road may want to turn it back to original. However, I do see that one hole on each side of the quater panel will definitely filling and paint and prep work. Also some minor rust damage along the length of the car were the filler was installed will have to be repaired. This is a project which seems like it can eat up quite a bit of vacation time!
I'm not sure I understand what your trying to say about the holes. Since it is going on a 2 door, you will need 1" holes. Just lay the spoiler along the back edge so the studs are laying across the peak of the curve where it transitions from the top of the trunk to the back. Center the spoiler from side to side and mark the spacing on the very peak. Then remove the spoiler and center punch the marks right on the peak. Then carefully drill the 1" holes. As far as adding strength to the inside, you should have gotten the braces that weld to the trunk floor to carry the weight of the bumper. You can cut them out of another car or just buy new ones from any Mustang supply house. CJ Pony Parts have them for $10 each. Part # is M298. 800-888-6473
Way to go... ...Mavaholic! I always have to hunt to find out where I bought things. You have the company, part # and phone number right there. Are you still in the market for a Comet GT? I might know of one for sale. Seth seth@realtor.com
