I'm planning on making a trip to find some GT40 heads for cheap at the local small junkyards. I got the idea on how to identify them. but few questions

-Any special tools i'll need to pull em?
-If its the right year explorer and the right head, IT WILL HAVE 3 Bars? theres no other heads out there with 3 bars on other year explorers that are worthless correct?
-are the gt40p heads worth anything to other car people?

I'm hoping to find a few sets and sell them on craigslist :)

The mav is gone but i'm still here!
97 had both regular and P versions. The Mustang guys like the P heads, and they have headers available that will work with them. No really special tools are required. The only issue is that your competing with every other Ford guy out there looking for those heads. Down here their extremely hard to find. Also the GT40 intake is worth some money, do some research on it. But it is also extremely hard to find because the efi guys snatch them up.

yep gt-40 96-97 part year 3 bars only. P heads are worth money, the gt-40 intakes are worth money, and them years 4 hole 19lb injectors are worth money. No special tools required just don't leave until there in your cart or some one else will likely finish them up quick.

Around here p heads 2-250 ish
    gt-40 complete intake 150ish
    new 19lb injectors 75ish

    Good luck, and happy hunting.

    So i found a couple untouched 96 explorers..they were 4L cars... :(

I did find a 5.0HO motor in a Mustang. The car got crunched in the front. fairly new stang..like late 90's i think. but i dont think theres anything I need or want off that car either. motor was complete.

it never hurts to look at a mustang for aftermarket parts

and the late 95 to early 97 explorer has gt40's after that they are gt40p's

    gt40 goes for $350 - $400

    gt40p 250 ish

    gt40 intake 150 - 200 ish

H.O mustang is always a good candidate for a serpentine setup, then find a 130 amp alternator to complete upgrade.

wiring harness, intake manifold, injectors, maf, ecu for a efi swap.

the motor for a roller cam block

e7 heads is an upgrade to your stocker early 70 heads

honestly I would just grab the whole drivetrain hopefully its a t-5. Do a whole swap if your up for it :)

And always look over mustangs for performance goodies, esp if it was just crashed and an insurance settle sent it to the junk yard.

I would look for a 88/89 HO they were like the best. Roller cam, forged pistons, etc. They were also in the Ford Thunderbird. Then slap on some GT40 heads and some roller rocker and you have a cobra spec motor and around 300HP.

I agree the forged slug setups are the best, but if you have a stock 302 that motor will be a very nice upgrade :)

See if you can find a set of junk yard gears to add to combo and really put a smile on your face every stop light
