Hey guys, any ideas in what headers will fit a 351w swap with an AJE K member? Built myself a 388w, dart block .060 over and 3.75 stroke, afr heads...should be 520ish hp, but my ever loathed 6901 headers hit the frame rails and firewall. Tried 88400 Hedman shorties and they fit, but the opening is smaller than my AFR 185 heads. I ordered some 1 5/8 tubing to reroute some pipes, but I would rather not.
I have headers by Tubular Automotive on my 421W. Autokrafters is one source. I had to caress a couple of tubes with a ball peen hammer to make them fit properly. They are small tube, but I haven't seen a problem with my stroker motor. Good luck, Lee "THE MAV" Richart
Here is what worked and what didn't work. This is a 351w with a AJE K member and cut shock towers. Well I bought Doug's Tri-Ys 669y-r and they don't fit, so don’t buy those and they have the wider header bolt pattern. Patriot headers H8482 fit like a dream, no cutting or denting needed. Hooker 6901 - not even by a mile, they hit the firewall, the steering shaft, the frame rails. I ended up buying foxbody headers - Summit Racing G9030 and Flowtech 12104FLT, both of which I liked the quality on. I didn't want shorty headers after watching Richard Holdener do a test on them and comparing them to long tubes, so I modified the foxbody headers. Driver side #4 tube was rerouted and passenger side #2 tube needed to be tucked in a little
My 77 currently has a 302 from a 94 F150 with roller lifters and a stock cam, but he said the rockers were not rollers. It was originally fuel injected but it's been completely rebuilt with a Holly 600 carb and stock manifolds and exhaust. The motor runs really sweet, sounds good even with a stock dual exhaust and has good top end power, but it lacks what I'll call "now power". I want more immediate acceleration and a deeper sound would also be nice. Since I'm not a real experienced motor guy, I hoped for some advice here. I was told by the previous owner that a racing cam and headers would provide what I'm looking for, do you agree? On the headers, I see regular and long tube but not sure which fits best under a Maverick. From what I've read the long tube pipes result in lower exhaust back pressure, improved oxygen intake and a boost in horsepower. But how do they fit on my car? Thanks for the feedback folks.
Dyno testing has shown to add a considerable torque down lown from long tube headers and a little bit of horsepower up top. Here is a link: Hooker 6901 are the only ones I have tried on my stock shock towers and steering and they fit terribly, some of the guys here have had good luck with them though.
Long duration, rumpty rump, racing cams KILL low end power. This is why high stall converters and/or deep gears are used to get vehicle moving from a standstill. Assuming engine has stock E7 heads(on every HO & truck 5.0 from '87-'94 Stang & up to '96 in trucks), are not exactly towers of power.
Yeah, don't go too big. For a budget build you can get a cheap seat of GT40 heads and buy the Comp Cams spring kit that allows like .530 lift and stick a 200 to 218 at .050 cam in it. There are a ton of options out there.
