I just bought a 73 comet, v-8 302 this is my first car that really belongs to me, and it runs like a dream right out of the factory .. im having a problem starting it when ever i turn the key it just clicks.. the batterys not dead i checked that its not the starter, or the wiring... i think its the solinoid im not sure the clicking sound seems to come from the solinoid. Im not used to having the solinoid not attached to the starter this is the first car ive seen that its not attached, i just wanted to know if any one could help me before i go and replace all the wiring and starter If any one could help me that would be great.
check and clean your battery terminals, take the starter in and have it tested.more than likely it is the selonoid.better to check everything that you can, befor wasting money on parts not needed.
I cleaned the terminal and connections, and we took the starter in yesterday, its not that. The car started great two days ago. I parked it and went in for the night and the nexted day it wouldnt start. First i thought i left a light on but its not the battery its still good. So it must be the solinoid does any one know where i can pick one up. I live in Aberta, Canada
Solenoid... ...they are cheap. Shouldn't be more than $15 at most parts stores. Just change wires over to the new one one at a time to keep from crossing them up. Be sure to disconnect your negative battery cable first. Like the others said, make sure you have clean cables and connections before you buy one. It is often a corroded connection. Seth
Thanks im going to go pick one up now and try and it im pretty sure its not the wires tho i checked all of them plus the guy i bought the car from redid most of the wiring on the car
i put the solinoid in and it didnt help, the solinoid just makes a buzzing sound now. I dont know what to do.
Will it start if you attempt to jump it off?...the fact that the solenoid is buzzing now tells me the battery is gettin weaker by the minute...if it starts with a boost you got a weak battery
there are these little wire that have thes little rubber flaps on them that say fuse+a number that are conected to the solinoid could these have anything thing to do with my problem. if so what should i do about it.
ok i tried to start it with the head lights on and they dimmed alot but didnt quite go out soo ill take the battery in... you must need a pretty powerful battery to power this car cuz i tried the battery in my friends truck and it started up fine.
How do you know the starter is not shorted or has a bad connection ? Everything points to the starter now that you have said that your battery started your friends vehicle . This is assuming that you have cleaned all connections and what not .
