What do you recommend for a shift kit?

    Trans-Go or B&M?

    Thoughts, comments?

    Shift Kit

I have used both and my opinion is that maybe the Trans-Go is a little better. Nothing wrong with the B&M but just liked the other for my use. Get the full shift kit not just the shift improver version, they run around 70.00 here. The last couple of trans I did, altered the pressure and such without a kit, used a steel ball to block the cutback valve and removed a couple of springs and a checkball. Shifts just as hard as using a kit but at no cost. Is hard to exsplain how unless you have a diagram to go by, will try and get one drawn and copied if I ever get time.

What is the difference between the Improver version and the full kit?

(I really like the trans-Go kit in my FMX Mustang.)

    Shift Kit

The shift improver kit is a do it yourself valve body kit that most of us can install. It will hold 1st and 2nd at any rpm, no change in the automatic stage. The next kit is a full manual shift, no automatic at all. Then there are a couple of high performance kits that can be used full manual or a combo of both manual and auto features. These mostly require trans removal to install special sealing rings etc. Go to TransGo webb site and they should have all the part no's and some explanation of each. The only reason that all car mfgs. don't use a kit in theirs, is that the general public wants a nice smooth shifting car. This is not so bad except the trans would last a lot longer if it could shift firmer and with no delays in sequence of gear changes, all hard on clutches etc.

I worked with a fellow that bought a new 68 plain jane, 6cyl Chevy. He never let it shift auto, nuetral at the stop then put in low and upshift each gear. Ended up with over 200,00mi on it and never did have any trans trouble(with good maintenance too). The best investment to make in any case is a cooler add on. My 2000 F150 came with one and a lot of other makes do the same. I have mentioned this before but it is a great improvement to the C4 shifts, 2to3 especially. Find a C4 at the salvage yard that has a "H" marked servo, most are A or B. The H has a larger piston diameter and will help apply and release the intermediate band better. These are getting hard to find, mostly in truck applications. There is even one bigger from a 351w C4 it is "R" marked. These are "real hard to find". In case you run into some, I'll buy all you can get. They replace your existing one in every way but the internal size is what matters. Have I heard that phrase somewhere before?;) ;)

    Good info, Old Guy. Thanks!

This is a column shift daily driver, so I think the improver kit is all I need. before I spend any real money on this trans, I think I would convert to an AOD.

The main issue I would see with anyone converting to a manually shifted auto is the durability of the linkage. I used to be in fleet maintenance management and Pizza Hut was one of my accounts. They went through auto shifters every 30k. Most auto shifters are not built for constant shifting.

    Thanks!
