Just put the B&M shift kit in my c4, set to RV style instead of street strip, and it firmed the shifts up quite a bit. Before installing this kit, I had a flare on the 2-3 shift, but it wasn't as pronounced as the shift was so slushy with the factory settings. Now that the shift is firmed up, the flare is consistent, noticable and annoying. I know there is a band adjustment, although I haven't looked up how, but are there any other things to look for? Also, if you could give me some tips on the adjustment, I would appreciate it.
I know he has answered this post before---try the search button--I am sure you will find it, I remember a specific post where he described the process, sounded pretty easy.
Actually band adjustments are very easy...in fact, i think you can manage it in under 20 minutes! All you have to do is find the two adjusting bolts (have small, square heads and lock nuts, one on each side), loosen the lock nuts and tighten the bolts down to exactly 10 ft-lbs (tight, but not incredibly tight). Now PLEASE NOTE, i'm not positive about these, so double check!!!: The driver side bolt needs to be backed off 1 3/4 turns, the passenger side 3 full turns. This is a lot easier than it sounds because the heads of the bolts are square, and each side of the square= 1/4 turn. I know it's 1 3/4 and 3 turns, but i don't have my book with me so i'm not positive off the top of my head which is for the driver and which for the passenger. Like i said though, it's very easy to do. As for other suggestions, i'll leave that up to old guy....he's helped me out a million times with my c4.
I tried the search, but this site has a minimum of three characters required for a search, and c4 would be two! I guess I can look in my service manual and find the procedure, but I was kinda looking for old guy's insight, as servo springs, etc might also help.
Adjusted the 2-3 band as suggested, and I still have the flare between shifts. Mostly part throttle, not coasting or full power. I think I may have a little clearance in the clutch pack. The fluid was guite thick when I dropped the pan.
flare I had the same trouble. It turned out the servo didn't have full travel in its bore. Just a thought.
Somebody e-mail Old Guy. I think he had his feelings hurt when the database problem deleted some of his racing times posted. Stefan cleared the air on this one and identified the missing posts as a computer problem, not moderator tyranny. I think Old Guy was thinking that they had been deleted intentionally. Seth
cause of stuck servo. Maxpower- Sorry it took me a while to get back to you. The trans had been sitting for quite some time and old dirty fluid had gummed it up in its bore. I think if I had taken it apart and cleaned it before installing the tranny (it was in a '75 Courier pickup behind a mild 302. Not enough room to replace in the vehicle) it wouldn't have been a problem. I ended up buying a race prepped c4 from GER so I didn't bother going any further than diagnosing it.
I'm guessing mine isn't a stuck servo, because the flare doesn't occur when it is cold and the fluid is thick, only when it was warm. Judging from the amount of clutch material in the pan, I think and overhaul is my cure.
