    Hello All,

I am trying to test everything. I tried to jump the stater bypassing the solenoid. I hooked a battery cable to the positive battery post and touched the other end of the cable to the starter terminal. All I got was a spark then it started to burn. I had the key on the ignition.

    Did I do this right?

    Thanks!!

It should have cranked, possibly solenoid is shorted to ground.

Disconnect starter cable from solenoid, then touch cables together, should crank. Except that starter does/doesn't operate, it's not proof positive of anything else.
