I have a 7.3 PSD that is totally complete (less alternater) and runs super. It's a 95, but swaps 95-97 according to my salvage yards. Point is, I am scrapping one of my E350 vans, and besides about $200 in crush weight, the engine is the only other good part... I have been trying to get a salvage yard to buy the van, and they all want it, but no one will tell me what they will pay. They want me to say what I will take for it... I don't know what the engine goes for. Who had bought a good used 7.3 PSD lately? What did you pay? Thanks! Dave Btw: PSD = Power Stroke Diesel
PSD are pricey , no matter the condition, i perfer 7.3 over 6.0 and the new 6.4 anywhoo does it run good? miles? its worth a good bit
Yeah, I wouldn't own anything other than a 7.3 PSD. I am in construction, so you know I am exposed to all kinds of trucks and owners that give me feedback... Everyone hates the 6.0 PSD, the 6.4 PSD scares everyone because it has already gone through a series of problems. Before 2000 units were on the market, they were burning down houses! That, and 50k for a diesel truck... I would love to keep this engine, I have a fleet of 7.3s to worry about... A spare engine would be great. However, I can use the dough right now, and the shop space the engine would take up.
I don't know about used but 2 or 3 years ago my Dad paid $10,000 for a new one. that was just the engine and I think the dealer that installed it had to put some of Dad's part off the old engine on the new one so it wasn't a complete ready to run engine. I would think that a good used one would go for at least half that??? or am I smoking up the place??
I really just want a salvage yard to drag the whole van off. They just won't make me an offer. I checked around... the engine is interchangeable between 95-97 engines/trucks. Salvage yards get $1500 for a well used, but running PSD of those years. The van weighs about $200 in scrap steel. That's $1700 retail. Yards are only going to buy wholesale, especially since they are going to pick up the carcass and sit on it until a buyer comes along. I figure they will pay 50%. So I suppose the van is worth $850. This way I don't have to worry with strangers coming to look a PSD that looks just like any other PSD, whiners, and overzealous hagglers. Add to that the nightmare of getting a PSD out of an Econoline! I think I'll ask $1000, take $850, let the yard drag it away, and never look back. Most professional yards only sell to mechanics anyway. The mechanics installing an engine could care less how many miles are on it. As long as it runs and the yard stand behind it for 30-90 days. If I sold it independently, I will have some jackleg haggling me for pennies over every mile on the engine. Am I thinking clearly?
That's basicly what my original post was about. Sell the whole thing to a yard. I just wondered what I should ask the yard for in price. I didn't want to sell myself short, or spoil the deal by asking too much. I was on another site that deals only with PSDs and found it was hard to sell a 'high' mileage PSD privately. $500 was the common offer it seems, after 200k miles. Now, when I say "high" miles, anyone knows a PSD is only half done, at most, with 200k. 400-600k miles is not uncommon for a 7.3 PSD. That is probably why there is not alot of call for them in general. One yard said they will sell it, no problem, but will probably sit on it long term. Same yard said they have a row of Cummins (Dodge) engines waiting for buyers, but haven't sold one since 05! If I didn't need the dough, I would be smartest to just sit on this thing.
Yeah, that is habit from the PSD message board... I thought about it and put that at the bottom of the post to clarify. Sorry about that. I have been running those diesels since 95, add to that they have become so popular, I don't realize not everyone is familiar with them. Update: I have stripped a great deal of small stuff off the van, as well as all the specialty mods that customize the van to our industry. It is about ready to get gone. I haven't approached the guy that I fully expect to buy it for $850, yet. I am waiting until I have the van ready to be dragged off right then and there. In the time being, just for giggles, I put the van on CL for $1850, just to see if something pops. I have had a great deal of interest, but no takers. I am putting the link to the add here, but take it all with a grain of salt. I was honest to a fault in the add and layed it on THICK. Just to keep the 'problem buyers' at bay... hopefully. http://pensacola.craigslist.org/pts/637716884.html I figure by Monday afternoon I'll be sick of taking odds and ends off the van and ready for that $850.
I've sold off some service vans over the years that were way worse than that, ours rust out up here, usually we get 10 years or so out of them.
This van was starting to flake up under where the doghouse meets the floor and a few other corners under the rubber mat in the front. I never noticed it before. I was a little surprised to see it to tell the truth. Then I realized that we have regularly washed that van out with a hose since 95. So the jute under the rubber mat and the dirt that collected in corners held moisture and made rust inevitable in those areas. Took 13 years to get that far though. We also panel our cargo areas with wood... walls, floor, doors, and sometimes ceiling. The floor in this van was installed all those years ago and was starting to rot from the water exposure. I wonder what's lurking under there? Can't see any sign of rust underneath though. Also, the foor has 'channels' so water can rinse away and the wood is elevated. I have always tried to wash them out while parked on an incline, so the water all runs out the back doors. My source for the 7.3 vans is drying up. They are mostly 6.0 PSD vans now. I spoke with them yesterday and they said the 6.0s have spent more time at the dealership being worked on, than on the job! He says he can't keep any of his 6.0s running. He is soooo cheezed. He is considering buying this 95 back and refurbishing it so he can build up a 7.3 fleet again. He is just balking on how to get the van 500 miles away, in it's current condition.
