so i was helping a buddy of mine work on a truck he just bought. it had a rod knock so i figured pull the pan off of it and plastigage it and if all specs are good throw in some new bearing. well we got the pan of and i happened to wiggle one of the conecting rods. there was so much room for it to move around on the crank. i took the cap off and there wasn't a bearing on it. same thing with the other two connecting rods on the front of the engine. so the first three conecting rods didn't have bearing in them. no wonder the truck had a rod knock. now it's find a new motor for it.
Wow, in all cases mentioned its not good.. You could get a crank kit, or maybe have that one turned to save some cash on the rebuild however.
That about as bad as an old 1978 jeep cherokee I bought, (yes here in Utah with all the retards) It had a recent rebuild on the AMC small block 360 and it smoked from the day I got it, I figured that something was wrong so I tore the motor down and in the valley clearly stamped is 401 (AMC only made 1 small block but to differentiate the motors the stamped the cu inches in 3 spots, under the motor mounts on each side and in the valley) so I proceded to pull the heads and found about a .035" gap in all of the rings and a hole lot of groves in that 401 block. I called the previous owner and turns out one of the local engine shops rebuilt it for him......Surprising enough they are no longer in buisness
