How do you tell a 351 W from a 351 C? I am wanting to put 351 heads and crank on my 302. I think this would make it a boss??? Anyway, if I do that, what parts will I have to get to fix? ex: intake manifold, headers, etc. Please help me cause I can get the parts if the 351 I found is a winsor. Just can't tell! Thanks and Merry Christmas!!!! Preston
The windsor engines have the thermostat housing in the intake manifold whereas the clevelands have it on the block. Also, the clevelands have really wide valve covers with 8 bolts in them where the windsor has a more narrower cover with only 6. If you've got a 302 block, the 351 crank/pistons/rods wont fit...the blocks are shorter on the 302's. You can, however, make a "fake" boss 302 out of a standard 302 engine, just add the cleveland heads and a special intake manifold. You will have to drill some holes in the block and plug a couple holes in the heads, but it can be done. Is it worth the money/effort? Not in my opinion...aftermarket heads will run circles around 2 barrell open-chamber cleveland heads.
Here's an easy way to tell ford engines. FE engines have 5 valve cover bolts. Windsors have 6. 429/460 have 7. And Cleveland/Modified engines have 8 valve cover bolts.
Thank you both for the info. I was just kicking the idea around, but I've decided that the cost wouldn't be feasible. Oh well. Anyway, thanks for the replies. Preston
