I was thinking of using a McLeod hydraulic throwout bearng instead of cable assembly. I found them, with a master cylinder, for about $270, $180 with out a master cylinder. I was wondering if any one had used this type of clutch, if was an easy swap, and how well it works.

Although i haven't personally used this setup, it works well and is extremely reliable (they use it in circle track and several others). I would be interested to know where you could find a McLeod Hyd. Throwout bearing for $180 though. I guess it depends what transmission you are getting it for. I looked for one for a T-5, the wholesale cost on it was $270. The guy even offered to cut me a deal at $285...but i turned it down. For a T-5 at least, there are much cheaper and equally reliable methods of hydraulic clutch release.

Several racing websites sell "universal" hyd. t/out bearings that are designed mainly for Chevys and run about as much as you are talking...don't know if they would work, but didnt' want to risk it on my setup. Hydraulic is definitely the way to go though.

As a second note, McLeod lists on their website two models--a slip on and a bolt-on. The list price for their slip-on is $330 and $370 for the bolt-on.

I found it in th P.A.W. (performance automotive warehouse) caotolog, it's the size of a phone book and its not free so I havn't gotten a new one in almost 2 years. I've seen pics of the bolt on type and it looks like it bolts in place of the bearing retainer, is this true? because mine is broken and this way I wouldn't have to replace it.

I also have a PAW catalog, but i couldn't find it in mine (mine is probably the same year as yours...2001). It's hard to say whether it replaces the retainer...i don't think most of them do though, they just have you remove two bolts and slip it on, then replace the two bolts. Can't say for sure though!

mine is older than I thought, its from 2000. I guess I'll have to check if they still sell them there. Is there any other companies that make hydraulic T/O bearings?

Well, dont' get me wrong, i just flipped through my catalog and i didnt' see them in the index...that doesn't mean they don't still have them! It depends what kind of transmission you are trying to get the hyd. t/o bearing for...if it's for a T-5 then the McLeod is the only one i was able to find....
